Horace Augustus Stannard was born in Lynn Road, Downham Market, Norfolk in 1912 (Downham Q3-1912 4B:567), son of George William and Flora Gertrude Maud STANNARD (née WATSON). He had at least 2 elder brothers and 5 elder sisters.

He married Evelyn Louisa BUTCHER [25-1-1911] in 1934. In the 1939 register Horace (dob here is 9-8-1911], a furrier's skin opener was with his wife at 31 George Street, Brandon. Also there was James G H HALL [30-4-1921] a furrier's skin opener. His parents were at 34 Bury Road, Brandon. His widow married Edward WALKLEY in Q2-1947 Newmarket.

The 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, having been in Tunisia, were part of the 12th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in Italy in 1944. They took Gabbiano on 1st July 1944 in the face of heavy enemy fire infantry,mortar and artillery (one of the Regiment's honours). Gabbiano is just south of Arezzo, and west of Lake Trasimeno.

The 2nd battalion lost 17 that day, most buried in Assisi, 5 in Foiano.

The local press reported in July:-

K.I.A. - In July a Service was held for a Brandon man, Private Horace Augustus Stannard, who was killed in action in the Mediterranean. The Service was held at the Methodist Church on London Road, Brandon, and the Rev A.J. Wiffen and Mr W.H. Thoday, a L.C.C. Schoolmaster, formerly of Brandon, paid tributes. His widow and other relatives attended the Service.
